I can safely say Im a big fan off breadcrumbs, I feel that these are quite underestimated in the overall ease of use and experience of a successful website. They give you a precise navigation point and in turn open up the consumer to a wider range of products that maybe your menu structure could not of accommodated for.

I'm a big fan of supplemental text to reinforce the navigation - I've used it on my website.

Three questions visitors should NEVER have to stop to ask themselves when browsing ANY page of your website are: 1) Where am I? 2) Where are the other pages? 3) How can I get home?

The principles summarized in this post help to ensure that this doesn't happen... and if it does happen, the answers should be as obvious and/or easy to locate as possible.
