Great job on the article - very well put together and easy to read! You might also want to take a look at ConceptFeedback.com, a place to get quick, affordable feedback on the design, usability, and strategy of a website from a community of experts.

I have been working on a usability tool my self because some of the tools you mentioned had some limitations that made it hard for us to deploy on large scale application. So when I got to opportunity to build a new usability tool to grabbed it with my arms wide open.

This is when http://speedo.no.de/ was born. It's currently a alpha build / proof of concept of what to come and there for, it's also free to use. It generates heat maps of your currently active users in real time. So when a user clicks on a button on your site you will immediately see it rendered in your browser. It works on all pages, no restrictions what so ever. See http://screenr.com/prr ( old interface )

A new feature that I added a few weeks ago is the ability to follow "active" users on your site. With a click of a button you can follow users in realtime. See there mouse movements and events render in your browser while they are surfing your website. http://screenr.com/YGn ( new interface )

So take it for a spinn while it's hot :)

Thanks for the article. I can't help thinking that you're missing one important tool, namely http://mouseflow.com . This tool surpasses the other mentioned tools in terms of both functionality and pricing. If offers video playback of visitor sessions as well as heatmap and link analysis. Check it out :)
