David, I think your rant got across the message that designers need to try different approaches rather than just use the latest trend without giving it any thought.

I'm definitely trying new approaches when designing new sites and it feels refreshing. I'm glad that there has been a trend away from trends lately.

I'll be the first to put my hand up and say that that was one of my weakest rants ever.

I still feel the same way about letter press but I never got my point across well enough in that video. The thing that drives me a bit dilly with trends is that people just use them for the sake of using them, the letterpress trend is often used just because it's there.

I can understand people wanting to use it because it suits the theme of their site / logo / buttons, but using it just because you can is wrong. I always believe that really good design has reason, there is a reason for every element and it the elements around it.

Besides all that (covering my ass) I liked this article quite a bit.

I especially liked this comment from John:

'As with almost any popular design trend, once the popularity dies down, each element will find its niche and become useful and valid when in moderation.'

That's a pretty cool statement in my books.

First off, Anvers in the form fields is awesome.

Next, good post. Trends are trends for a reason, they look good and they succeed at what they do. If they are being overused it's not a detriment to the trend it's only making the site that used them look poor.

The From The Couch stance on the letterpress effect is idiotic, in my opinion. I love the letterpress effect and when used correctly it's transparent design (aka perfect design). I bet the majority of us don't even realize it's all over the iPhone and I don't think Apple is going to be taking the letterpress effect off the iPhone anytime soon.

I love these web design trends. I routinely implement many of them and do it well. As long as you keep some restraint in mind and use these trends successfully there's no reason they ever have to go anywhere. (Are people ever really going to stop using gradients? no.)
